Installing Software and Practice Files for Training
Classes
If you need to install a software application for a training class, contact
the Help Desk at x8940. Software should be provided at least two weeks in advance
of the class. Practice or other files for student use can be installed by placing
them in the Temp_File_Store folder located on the desktop.
IT recommends that you schedule time to test your installed software and practice
files in the training center several days prior to the giving class.
Note that all software and data installed for a training class will be discarded once the training class is completed.
Usage Policies
To enhance network and user security, and maintain computer performance, the
following policies are in place for the Computer Training Center:
- Computers automatically get rebooted daily at 11pm
- No food or drink allowed.
- Use of the room is only for Rockefeller University users.
- Room is only available to be used for training purposes only. General use of the computers is not permitted.
- Computers will automatically discard any data saved by users if the machine is rebooted for any reason. Save your documents frequently while working to prevent accidental loss. All computers are scheduled for daily, automatic reboot for maintenance purposes. To temporarily store files overnight or for a training class, use the Temp_File_Store folder located on the desktop. Files in this folder will not be discarded if the computer is rebooted. However, the Temp_File_Store folder will be emptied periodically. We recommend storing or transferring data by using the Central File Store (CFS), Exchange of Large Files (ELF), e-mail, or burning files to a CD.
- Computers in the training room are NOT equipped with floppy or Zip drives. You must bring an external drive or use a CD/DVD and use the built-in operating system burning software.
- Programs may be installed by authorized IT personnel only. To have a program installed, contact the Help Desk at x8940. Note, not all programs will be installed. Programs that are installed must benefit the campus community.
