Physical Security:
Protect your computer against damage, loss and theft

Physical security is an underestimated, often overlooked aspect of securing your computer and its data, according to the National Institute of Health's Information Security Web site. Physical safeguards protect information assets from a variety of threats, including damage, loss, and theft. From power surges to unauthorized visitors, be aware of physical threats against your information and equipment, and how to protect yourself from them.

Digital crime is not the only threat against your computer.

Security Checklist - Physical Security check
Is your computer and information in physical danger? Complete this checklist to learn what to watch for.

I lock my computer workstation with a password protected screen saver when I leave my computer unattended during the day.
(How do I lock my Windows computer?)

I also use a password-protected screen saver that activates after 20 minutes of inactivity.
(How do I turn on the screen saver on my Mac or PC?)

When I leave for the day, I close all files and applications and log off my computer (but leave it on) so it can be properly backed up.
(How do I log off my computer?)
If I use a laptop, I secure it with a kensington lock and use an inconspicuous carrying case when traveling.
(What is a kensington lock?)
If left vacant, our office or lab is secured to prevent theft.
If I have written down my password, I store it a secure location, out of view from others. I do not post it onto my computer or other exposed surface.
I keep paper files, disks, CDs or DVDs containing sensitive information in locked drawers.
I stay alert if strangers enter my work area. I question or report an unescorted stranger’s presence or suspicious activity.
I do not use my card key to allow unauthorized personnel to enter restricted areas.
