Announcement Type:
General Advisory
Subject: BitTorrent P2P file-sharing blocked on campus
Service(s) Affected: BitTorrent
Effective Date: Wednesday, December 2, 2009
Description: Information Technology (I.T.) has received multiple notices that the BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol is being used on campus for illegal file sharing in violation of copyright law. Because of the legal risks associated with copyright violation via the use of BitTorrent, and because indications are that BitTorrent is not being used on campus for university business, I.T. needs to block the use of BitTorrent.

If you have legitimate scientific use for BitTorrent file sharing, contact the Help Desk at ext. 8940 and I.T. will work with you to help you investigate alternative solutions. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Best Practices When Using Shared & Public Computers
Announcement Type:
General Advisory
Subject: Best Practices When Using Shared & Public Computers
Description: There are a number of risks involved when using shared & public computers, particularly at places like libraries, Internet cafes, airports, and copy shops. The network may be poorly secured and easily exploitable by hackers and thieves--one of whom may be sitting right next to you, looking over your shoulder, and stealing your information. The use of shared and public computers is ill-advised if you are working with sensitive information of any kind. When using a shared or public computer on campus, always follow the best practices outlined below:

Guidelines for using a shared or public computer:

  • Log off any online sessions
  • Delete browser cache/temp files
  • Never use the Remember or store passwords for online web sites
  • Never leave your computer unattended while logged into any online web sites
Some common risks associated with using public computers and Internet cafes are:
  • Web Browsers often record (or cache) your browsing history in cookies, enabling companies and individuals to track your surfing habits and possibly access the your online accounts you've logged into
  • Keyloggers may be installed that track your keystrokes in order to access your passwords and user IDs
  • Spyware may track your browsing habits and record your passwords and login information
  • Thieves literally looking over your shoulder to steal personal and sensitive information
Some common risks associated with using shared computers on campus are:
  • Web browsers may record (or cache) your browsing history or documents in cookies, enabling other individuals to view the websites you visited or documents you printed
Action Required: Use caution when using a shared & public computer
Additional Information:

Firewall Changes to Protect Specialized Internet Services
    Announcement Type:
    General Advisory
Subject: Firewall Changes to Protect Specialized Internet Services
    Service(s) Affected:
  • If you don’t administer and run your own internet services, this does not apply to you
  • Public Internet Services accessible from off Campus
    (that use ports below 1024)
  • Current publicly available “web” servers will not be affected
  • Description: Information Technology (I.T.) is making a change to the campus firewall settings to better protect department and laboratory data and resources from accidental exposure to the Internet. If your lab or department has its own system administrator, the information in this message should be forwarded to the system administrator.

    DETAILS
I.T. will change the campus firewall settings to close all internet ports below 1024 to external traffic. This means that if you are running a service that uses any port below port 1024, and you require the service to be publicly accessible (from off-campus without VPN), you will need to inform I.T. about the service so it can be classified as publicly available. See below for information about services that may be affected by this change.

I.T. needs to differentiate campus Internet servers that are meant for internal use only from those that are publicly accessible via the Internet. Each server requires different security rules. Publicly accessible servers that are not properly classified will not have the correct security rules and might become inaccessible from outside the Rockefeller network including RUWireless without using VPN.

Examples of services that will be affected by this change and will need to be classified include (but are not limited to):

    • afpovertcp (Apple File Sharing Protocol over TCP)
    • Private IMAP (University’s main campus mail system is not affected by this change)
    • Privately written/coded applications using ports below 1024
This change has no affect on normal HTTP web services using port 80/443

All previously identified machines and services such as SMTP and web including SSH (port 22), are not affected by this change.

I.T. has completed a preliminary network scan to detect, classify and list publicly accessible Internet servers on campus. Please review the list to ensure that your servers are classified correctly. The list appears on the Information Technology web site at http://it.rockefeller.edu/index.php?page=publicserversbelowport1024

If you have any questions or would like for your service to be considered for exemption, contact the Help Desk at x8940.

Effective Date: Wednesday, September 16, 2009
    Action Required:
  • If you have a service that is intended to be publicly accessible, please verify that it is on the list (linked above) to ensure that access to your data is not interrupted once the rules go into effect. To include a new server on the list, send a request to the Help Desk and include the service type and the server address.

  • If your server appears on the list (linked above) but is NOT intended to be publicly accessible, please send a request to the Help Desk to have the server removed from the list and reclassified to allow internal access only.
  • Additional Information: See Website: http://it.rockefeller.edu/index.php?page=publicserversbelowport1024

    Network printing from Mac computers
    Announcement Type:
    General Advisory
Subject: Network printing from Mac computers
Service(s) Affected: Printing from Mac computers
Description: Information Technology (IT) recently upgraded the firmware on the core campus network switches during routine maintenance. As a result of this upgrade, IT received reports from some Mac users of being unable to print to network printers. IT has since downgraded and reverted back to the prior firmware and we have still received the same reports. It is not specific to a certain operating system or printer make or model. We have found that deleting and re-adding the printer profile to have resolved this issue, but, the way the printer profile is re-added will vary from user to user.

If you are still unable to print from your Mac computer and require assistance with re-adding your printer profile, contact the Help Desk at x8940. When contacting the Help Desk, you may need to provide the IP address of the printer.

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused some users.
