Updating Virus Definitions For Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition

To protect your computer against viruses it is important to keep up with the latest virus definitions and upgrade your virus protection software. Symantec Anti-Virus is available free to the campus from the Information Technology Web site.

  1. LiveUpdate

  2. LiveUpdate is a program which connects to Symantec's FTP servers, downloads the latest definitions, and applies the definitions to the computer on which it is running.

    To run LiveUpdate:

    Windows Users:
    Note: Users who have installed Endpoint Protection, do not have to run the LiveUpdate as it will perform the update automatically.

    1. Open Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition.
    2. Click LiveUpdate.
    3. Follow the on-screen prompts to download the latest definitions.

    Mac OS 9 Users:

    1. Open Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. You can find Norton in Control Panels, under the Apple menu.
    2. Click LiveUpdate.
    3. Follow the on-screen prompts to download the latest definitions.

    Mac OS X Users: (NAV 9)

    1. Click the Go menu, and then click Applications.
    2. Open the Symantec Solutions folder.
    3. Double-click LiveUpdate.
    4. Click The Update Everything Now button.
    5. Enter your password in the Authenticate window, and then click OK (this window may pop up several times).
    6. When LiveUpdate completes updating, the LiveUpdate summary window appears. You may now quit LiveUpdate.
    7. Run LiveUpdate again to ensure that you have all available updates.

  3. Virus Definitions Update Installer (Windows PCs Only)

  4. The Virus Definition Update Installer is an executable file that you may use to update virus definitions. If you are updating Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition for Windows 95/98 or Windows NT, you can simply run the Virus Definition Update Installer to update the virus definitions on your local computer.

    To Download Definition Updates:

    1. Go to http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/download.html
    2. .
    3. Select the appropriate Language and Product (Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition), and then click Download Updates.
    4. Download the MMDDx86.exe file (MMDD indicates the date of the definition file).

    Once you've downloaded the file, simply double-click it to update your virus definitions.

  5. To configure NAV to check for new virus definitions daily

  6. The default installation of Norton AntiVirus does not check for new virus definitions daily. To modify this setting, visit IT's web site.

  7. To Scan Your System for Viruses

    1. Click Scan from the menu bar and select Scan Computer to open the Scan Computer dialog box.
    2. Click in the box next to My Computer to select and scan all drives, or click in the box next to an individual drive to select and scan it.
