What is your RUNet Passphrase?
Your RUNet passphrase is a “master passphrase” that lets you log in to following accounts and services:
- Central File Store (CFS)
- Exchange of Large Files (ELF)
- Inside
- Secure Exchange of Large Files (sELF)
- VPN
- Webmail
- Windows Domain (ROCKEFELLERNT)
- Any application that asks for your Rockefeller e-mail username and passphrase
How to change your RUNet Passphrase
To change your RUNet passphrase, you must use the university’s on-line password management system (see instructions below). Your password must meet the university's secure passphrase requirements (read Requirements for Creating RU passphrase).
The Passphrase Management system is only available on the campus network, via VPN, or on Secure Wireless. Please contact the Help Desk at 212-327-8940 for assistance if you are off campus and cannot connect to the new page. Users may not reuse previous passphrase.
- Before changing your passphrase, log out and close your e-mail, VPN and other applications.
- Go to the Passphrase Management site.
- Log in using your currrent e-mail username and passphrase. Click Login>
- Click the Change Passphrase link.
- Enter the new password you wish to use in the New Passphrase text box.
- Confirm your new password by entering it again in the Confirm Passphrase text box.
- Click Save
Note: Once the passphrase has been changed, wait 15 minutes and then restart your computer
If you access your e-mail on a smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry (BIS only)), you must manually update the password that is stored on the device. Users who do not update their e-mail password on the device may cause their accounts to be locked due to failed password attempts.
Users who manually map/connect their computers to the Central File Store (CFS) and not log into the ROCKEFELLERNT domain, will need to disconnect the mapped drive and reestablish the connection. Otherwise, this may cause their accounts to be locked due to failed password attempts.
If you have forgotten your password or need assistance, come to the Help Desk with your Rockefeller University ID card.
Answers to Authentication Questions
Users may create answers to security questions that can be used in the event you forget your passphrase. This will allow you to reset your own passphrase without having to come to the IT Help Desk in person. By default, this is not enabled. Users will need to log into the Passphrase Management site and click Change Answers to Authentication Questions.Requirements for Authentication Answers
- Must be at least 4 characters long
- Cannot contain any non-English characters
- Cannot contain your username, first, or last name
Windows Domain - ROCKEFELLERNT

-
If your computer logs into the domian, the ROCKEFELLERNT name will be listed as the Log on to: computer.
